More than 6,500 voters turned out to vote in the 9th Ward that includes all of Chestnut Hill and a piece of Mt. Airy, propelling the successful campaigns of Governor Elect Tom Wolf, U.S. Congressman Chaka Fattah and newly elected PA Senator Art Heywood — all Democrats.

Wolf collected 5,781 votes in the 9th Ward, en route to a nearly 10-point victory over incumbent Republican Gov. Tom Corbett. Corbett received only 816 votes in the 9th Ward. The most amazing detail of the result is that Corbett is the first governor in state history to to fail to win re-election. that history began when Thomas Mifflin took office in 1790.

Fattah collected 4,664 votes in the 9th ward, besting the 1,444 votes cast for his Republican challenger, Armond James.

Haywood received 5,439 votes in the 9th ward to Republican challenger Robin Gilchrist’s 918. Heywood won in a landslide in the district, which extends from North West Philadelphia through Cheltenham and into Abington. He earned 75,502 votes (81.53 percent) to best Gilchrist’s 15,814 votes.
