Four girls from Wyndmoor’s Girl Scout Troop 779 are working on a project to help beautify Willow Grove Avenue for the “Bronze Award,” the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. The Girl Scouts have been watering and maintaining the existing flower barrels, will be adding new ones and have planted flowers and shrubs in front of several Wyndmoor businesses.
Junior Girl Scout, Hannah Schermer, proposed the idea, and three other Scouts, Anna Hyde, Sarah Beck and Natalie Drake, also are working with Hannah to achieve the award. Monika Schermer, Troop 779 leader, explained, “The girls met and developed an action plan, which included meeting with township officials and neighbors, researching project costs, fundraising and developing a schedule for watering, planting, etc., to do this project.
“The entire process is complex and helps the girls develop confidence, meet new people and develop ties to the community, and it creates a sense of ownership by taking responsibility of a big project and seeing it through. We are very proud of the girls and what we have accomplished.”
Girl Scout Troop 779 would like to thank many individuals and businesses for donating money to help them accomplish this project. They would especially like to thank Martinez Family Landscaping LLC for donating their labor and mulch and Primex Garden Center for discounting flowers and shrubs. They would also like to thank Jeff Harbison and local gardeners Susan Yeager and Laura Axel for sharing their expertise and flowers.
The Scouts said, “Troop leader, Monika Schermer, has devoted her time to help us with the project, and the Girl Scouts and parents would like to thank her." The girls hope Wyndmoor businesses and neighbors like the way the street looks, and they hope to return in the spring to replant new annuals.
If you would like to help Girl Scout Troop 779 with this and other projects, send tax deductible donations to Girl Scout Troop 779, 1506 E Mermaid Lane, Wyndmoor, PA 19038.
