Avenida, the Latin bar and restaurant at 7402 Germantown Ave., has closed after four and a half years as chef-owners Edgar and Kim Alvarez renovate the eatery to prepare it for its reopening on May 27, when it will debut as Cantina Avenida.
According to Philly.com, the entire restaurant – decor, menu, drinks, pricing – is undergoing a makeover. Chef Edgar Alvarez has created a brand new menu, inspired by his childhood in Guatemala, which will feature smaller, sharable plates with prices no higher than $15. Some of the items included on the menu are carnitas tacos, crab nachos and a Sonora bacon-wrapped hot dog with avocado salsa and queso fresco. Tablecloths will be shed and the main dining room will be repainted in brighter, airer colors to lighten and invigorate the atmosphere just in time for the summer season.
