It wasn’t a good night for Democratic candidates favored by the 9th Ward, which backed second place finisher Allyson Schwartz and last place vote getter Brian Gralnick for Governor and 4th District State Senator respectively.
It should have been no surprise that Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, a former Mt. Airy resident and one-time 9th Ward Democratic Committee leader, would get the endorsement of her “home crowd.” She captured almost 42 percent of votes cast with 1,563, beating all candidates including the eventual nominee, Tom Wolf, who garnered 1,253 votes or 33.5 percent.
Statewide, the congresswoman did not fair as well, finishing a distant second with 147,403 votes -- 30 points behind Wolf’s 485,002-vote win.
In the 4th Senatorial District, which had become competitive when incumbent LeAnna Washington was charged with fraud in March, Brian Gralnick finished 14 points ahead of winner Art Haywood with 1,736 votes for 50 percent. Hayward collected 1,292 votes in the 9th Ward and LeAnna Washington received 455.
Gralnick, a Cheltenham resident had been endorsed by the 9th Ward Democratic Committee. That committee endorsed Rob McCord for Governor.
