Pictured are the members of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s 4 x 400 relay team (from left): freshman Terri Turner (lead-off), sophomore Brooklynn Broadwater (anchor), sophomore Julia Reeves (second leg), junior Jamie Costarino (third leg).
Last Thursday at the Penn Relays the Blue Devil quartet won the Prep School “Prep” 4 x 400 meter relay race by more than six seconds with a time of 3:58.40. Their time set a new record in this division, surpassing the previous standard of 3:59.49 established by a Penn Charter team in 2008.
They moved on to Saturday’s Philadelphia Area 4 x 400 event on Saturday, finishing sixth in a 12-team field and lowering the school record once more to 3:57.06. On the anchor leg, Broadwater’s split was 54.6 seconds, the fastest lap recorded by any runner in the race. With no seniors and just one junior, SCH was one of the youngest foursomes in the elite competition.
