The Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields will host The Very Rev. Gary Hall, Dean of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. as the preacher of its monthly Choral Evensong service on Sunday, April 6 at 5:00 p.m.

The Very Rev. Gary Hall has been an outspoken advocate of gun violence prevention since his installation as dean. He most recently chaired the nationally promoted, second annual Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath, March 13 -16. In honor of Dean Hall’s commitment to gun violence prevention, a collection will be taken at the Evensong to support the Philadelphia Chapter of Heeding God’s Call, a faith-based movement to prevent gun violence. www.heedinggodscall.org

Musical selections for the April 6th Lenten Evensong include “Mt. St. Alban” by David Hogan for the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis; responses by Robert Lehman; and as the anthem, “Steal Away to Jesus” arranged by Nicholas White. St. Martin’s music has been referred to as ambitious, luminous, and memorable. The Chestnut Hill Local’s music critic, Michael Caruso, says St. Martin’s, “seriously take[s] music to a professional level of accomplishment.”

St. Martin-in-the-Fields is currently celebrating its 125th Anniversary: Rooted in Christ, Branching Out, Bearing Fruit. As part of this celebration, its Chancel Choir will take a pilgrimage to England, including visits to Exeter Cathedral and its namesake, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London. The monthly Choral Evensongs this winter and through the spring feature music they are preparing for this journey.
