Francis Schumann, 99, formerly of Chestnut Hill, a general surgeon, died Dec. 18 at his home in Machias, Maine.

Dr. Schumann had practiced general surgery at Chestnut Hill and Roxborough Memorial hospitals for 35 years.

Born in Germantown, he graduated from Germantown Academy, Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He completed a general surgery residency at Philadelphia General Hospital, followed by a fellowship at the Lahey Clinic.

Dr. Schuman joined the Army Air Force during World War II and served as a flight surgeon in the European Theater.

An active member of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School alumni's Class of 1939, he led the effort to establish the first class scholarship there. In retirement he was active in local causes in Maine, particularly conservation and the renovation of the Porter Memorial Library in Machias.

He is survived by his wife, Heidi; a daughter, Linda, of Trevose, and a son, Frank, of Seattle, Wash.
