Alexandra Biddle “Bab” Brock, 72, a community volunteer, died Jan. 25 of complications from a heart ailment at her home in Chestnut Hill.

Ms. Brock retired in 2010 from New Courtland Elder Services in Mt. Airy, where she had worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist.

She had been a volunteer at the Philadelphia Flower Show and the Chestnut Hill Holiday House Tours. Since retiring, she had volunteered at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill and at Face to Face in Germantown.

Born in Chestnut Hill, Ms. Brock had studied acting in New York City after graduating from the American School in Lugano, Switzerland. She returned to Philadelphia in the late 1960s and worked as accountant for several radio stations in the area.

After retiring, she realized a lifelong dream by traveling to the Galapagos Islands in 2011 and to Africa in 2013.

She was a member of the Penllyn Club and the Northeast Harbor Tennis Club in Maine, where she was a summer resident. She was a longtime supporter of the SPCA and the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

She is survived by sisters Pauline B. Houghton, of Cambridge, Mass., and Patricia B. Ingersoll, of Philadelphia, and a brother, Wayne Herkness, of San Francisco. A step-brother, Lindsay Herkness, died at the World Trade Center in 2001.

A memorial gathering will be held in Maine this summer. – WF
