CHCE offers classes, events to beat the February blues

Join your neighbors at a literary event, a sing-along, Italian and astronomy classes, and a community luncheon! The Chestnut Hill Center for Enrichment (CHCE) offers these up-coming events geared to adults “50 and better.” Call CHCE to register for any of these events (215-248-0180) or email the.chce@verizon.net. Literary Salon with Dr. T. Ramsey Thorp at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13,, at the Chestnut Hill Hotel Bombay Room:

Dr. Thorp is the founding ophthalmologist of Thorp Bailey Weber Eye Associates, LTD, and a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Pennsylvania. In 2005 he published “The Laying on of Hands,” a book dedicated to the discussion of the doctor-patient relationship. Seating is limited, so preregistration is highly recommended. A donation of $5 -$10 will support all CHCE programs for older adults. The Chestnut Hill Hotel is located at 8229 Germantown Ave.

Sing-along at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the CHCE:

Lynn Mather leads sing-alongs with familiar songs, ranging from musicals to standards to lullabies, camp songs and requests. You are welcome to bring your own musical instrument and your voice to the music in the CHCE Living Room.“Sing for Joy, Sing for Health” is offered monthly, from 1– 2:15 p.m., with the next ones scheduled for Feb. 4, March 4, and April 22. RSVP in advance or just come! The cost is $5 for each sing-along. The CHCE is located at 8431 Germantown Ave.

Two Italian courses begin Feb. 10 and 12 at the Center on the Hill:

Italian I is designed for students with little or no experience in the language. Steve Leonard holds beginner Italian classes on Wednesdays from Feb. 12 through April 16, from 10:30 to noon. The course focuses on conversation, paying particular attention to common situations and incorporating grammar and vocabulary as needed. Preregistration is required, and the fee is $75 for 10 classes.

Italian IV is the advanced version of the course for students with at least two years of Italian. Steve Leonard teaches advanced Italian classes on Mondays from Feb. 10 through April 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. The course focuses on improving basic language skills, using literature to review vocabulary and grammar. Registration is required, and the fee is $100 for 10 classes. The Center on the Hill is located at 8855 Germantown Ave.

“Good Heavens!” Astronomy course begins Monday, Feb. 24, at Center on the Hill:

Albert Lamperti leads a four-week study of what surrounds us all: scale of the cosmos and a 3-D Tour of the universe, space rocks, moon phases and supernova. The course meets Mondays, Feb. 24 through March 17, from 11 a.m. to noon. Registration is required, and the fee is $30 for the four-part course. Center on the Hill is located at 8855 Germantown Ave.

Community luncheons at noon every 4th Tuesday (Jan. 28, Feb. 25, March 25) at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill:

The Center for Enrichment, Chestnut Hill Meals on Wheels and the Center on the Hill co-sponsor the popular monthly Community Luncheon at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill. The noon meal is prepared by the kitchen staff of Keystone House, and the Unitarian Universalist Outreach Nurse is available to check blood pressure. Please RSVP by 5 p.m. the preceding Friday so the cooks can plan accordingly. The cost is $7 for those who RSVP in advance; those who forget to RSVP can join the luncheon for $10. The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill is located at 8855 Germantown Ave.
