The Chestnut Hill Historical Society and religious congregations in Chestnut Hill are embarking on a Spring 2014 series of lectures, tours and music focusing on the architecture and the history of Houses of Worship in Chestnut Hill.
The events will take place at various congregations, on Sunday afternoons and a Saturday evening.
The series will kick off at Our Mother of Consolation Catholic Church on Jan. 12 at 4 p.m., with a lecture on the architecture of the church building followed by holiday music and refreshments.
The next event will be two weeks later, on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m., across the street at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church. Here one can hear a lecture and an organ recital on the magnificent Aeolian-Skinner organ installed in 1956, followed by a tour of organ and refreshments.
On Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. we will be enjoying the beautiful sanctuary of Christ Ascension Lutheran Church on Germantown Avenue. Following the lecture will be communal singing and refreshments.
In March we will be visiting the Episcopal Church of St. Martin in the Fields, built by the Henry Houston family. The lecture followed by an evensong and refreshments will take place on March 2 at 4 p.m.
The oldest congregation and church building in Chestnut Hill, the Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, will be in the spotlight on March 23 at 4 p.m. Besides the lecture and tour of building there will be a tour of the cemetery located behind the church. Weather permitting, there will be a tour of the church’s belltower.
Our last event in this series is a visit to the new Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting House. On Saturday, April 12 at 6 p.m., there will be a lecture and tour of the new meetinghouse including (weather permitting) the 50-minute James Turrell Skyspace experience.
All these events are free but a good will offering at each congregation will be greatly appreciated.
