Germantown Avenue became a sea of pink last Friday as thousands of area Susan G. Komen 3-Day participants passed through Chestnut Hill.

More than 1,200 men and women walked in this year's three-day, 60 mile journey that began at Willow Grove Mall and ended at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Local residents and businesses cheered on the walkers, holding signs and offering an assortment of goodies from pink sugar cookies to chocolate candy.

J.S. Jenks Elementary School students donned pink and white to show support for the walkers. Some ignored the lunchtime aide and reached through the school playground's iron bars to give walkers high-fives. The cheers gave walkers, many of whom were breast cancer survivors, renewed strength. Several walkers wore outlandish costumes and funky hats. One masked man wore a cape, pink leotards, black boots and a sign that read Captain 3-Day.

Whether they strutted, strolled or limped, they all were committed to fighting breast cancer.

To walk, individuals must have raised a minimum of $2,300 for the cause.

This year's participants in the Philadelphia area raised more than $3.2 million for breast cancer research, scientific programs and community-based health and education programs.

According to the Susan G. Komen foundation's website, “each year, more than 200,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women, and 2,000 cases are diagnosed in men in the U.S.”
