Recently repaired stairs at Kitchens Lane.

by Joe Tressa

The Friends of the Wissahickon are seeking volunteers to help complete construction work on a new stone staircase recently installed at Kitchen’s Lane in Wissahickon Valley Park. The FOW is also working on the Upper Valley Green Parking Lot.

The first phase of construction on the parking lot is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 30. The parking lot will remain closed during the length of this project.

The dates for the second phase of construction are yet to be determined. Visitors of the park are urged to walk, bike, or use public transportation to get to the park.

The project will attempt to improve the water quality in the Wissahickon Creek. It will also improve parking conditions and restore native vegetation. The first phase involves stabilizing the stream bank along the parking lot, while the second phase involves resurfacing the parking lot.

The three upcoming dates when volunteers are needed in the Kitchens Lane area are July 31, Aug. 3 and Aug. 10. The times for all three dates are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To volunteer, contact FOW Volunteer Coordinator Eric Falk at falk@fow.org or 215-247-0417 x107. Registration is not required, but is recommended in order to be notified in the event of any changes due to weather. Volunteers are encouraged to bike, hike, or carpool to workdays. Workdays will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. Visit FOW's Facebook page or www.fow.org for updates.
