Coming down the home stretch of the summer hoops season, a group of area grads helped keep the Ursinus College entry among the upper echelon of the Malvern League with a victory last Wednesday evening.

During a week of brutally hot weather, players and spectators gained an added appreciation for the air-conditioned confines of the field house at Cabrini College.

For Ursinus, Meg Geatens, Angela Upright, and Adrienne Cellucci combined for 12 points in a 42-34 victory over Old School, a team composed of players who have been out of college for a few years. Geatens and Cellucci are each 2013 graduates of Mount St. Joseph Academy, while Upright recently collected her diploma from Germantown Academy.

The team’s two players from Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, Elana Roadcloud (’12) and Gianna Pownall (’13), were both away for some R & R last week.

Ursinus took the early lead with a three-pointer, but Old School kept pace. Geatens and Cellucci each hit a lay-up and Upright added a baseline jumper as the score seesawed up to 11-11. The Bears then moved ahead of Old School for good with a 10-3 run. The first six points for the leaders came on three field goals by sophomore Caroline Shimrock, a Gwynedd Mercy Academy alum, and the last four points were down to Geatens, who scored from the paint and then nailed a 15-footer from the right wing.

After that, Old School stopped its slide, and when halftime arrived the Ursinus advantage was still a modest one, four points at 25-21.

Bears senior Devin Butchko opened the second stanza with a driving lay-up and a pair of free throws. After Old School broke the ice on its side of the scoreboard with a lone free throw, Shimrock sank three of four tosses from the foul line for a double-digit margin (32-22), but Old School responded with back-to-back buckets and kept its deficit in single figures the rest of the way.

With under two minutes left, the lead was down to three points at 36-33, but Ursinus was now in the one-and-one bonus, and from the stripe freshman Olivia Kane went four-for-four and Alyssa Polimeni was two-for-two.

Shimrock and Kane finished with nine and seven points respectively, and the winners got six apiece from Geatens, Butchko, and Polimeni. Upright came away with four points, and Cellucci scored two.
