Heading into the July 4 break, Mount St. Joseph Academy pushed its record back into winning territory with a victory last Monday evening in the Lou Cappiella Summer Basketball League in Roxborough. For the second game in a row, wet weather forced the league competition indoors, where the Magic improved to 2-1 in summer hoops action by topping Norristown High School, 34-23.

Early penetration to the basket by rising junior Mary Kate Ulasewicz and sophomore Sarah Wills gave Mount St. Joe a 4-0 edge before the Norristown Eagles got on the board with a jumper from the left baseline. Although the Magic never trailed in the game, it took them awhile to go ahead for good.

The Mounties received their third field goal thanks to a scoop shot by senior Gen Hagedorn, but Norristown then drew even at 6-6, and stayed with the locals up to a 10-10 count. It was a score off a rebound by Hagedorn, who also converted on a foul shot awarded on the play, that broke this final tie to make it 13-10 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half.

The lead was reinforced as sophomore Caitlin Morrissey followed her own shot to score on the rebound, and as senior Jenny Geatens drove in for a lay-up. Geatens, whose older sister Meg just graduated from the Mount and is bound for Ursinus College, scored again before the opening period ended. Her second basket, which came on a midrange bank shot, was sandwiched between a short baseline jumper and a lone free throw by the Eagles, making it 19-13 for the halftime break.

Two field goals apiece by Wills and junior Emily Carpenter kept the momentum with the Mount as the second half progressed, giving the Magic a 27–17 advantage with 11:22 left on the game clock. Sophomore guard Libby Tacka finished out the game with a series of strong drives to the hoop, scoring Mount St. Joseph’s last seven points of the night as the Mounties came away with an 11-point margin of victory.

Tacka and Hagedorn had seven points apiece and Carpenter and Wills each finished with six in a balanced offensive effort. Geatens had four points for the night, while Ulasewicz and Morrissey contributed two points apiece.
