Springside Chestnut Hill Academy junior Caroline Canning was awarded the 2013 Vare Award, in Memory of Phyllis M. Vare and Johanna Sigmund.  Voted on by the full faculty, this award was established in 1987 for a junior who exhibits a keen interest in athletics, demonstrates sportsmanship and maintains consistent academic achievement.  Above all, the student must exemplify the attributes associated with Phyllis M. Vare, former head of the Physical Education Department.  The award also honors graduate, Johanna Sigmund, Class of 1994.  Johanna lost her life in the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and it is fitting that she, who won this award in her junior and senior years, who perfectly exemplified the qualities of the award, be forever associated with its ideals.
