Residents gather to remember local fallen heroes

by Sue Ann Rybak "Our presence here is in solemn commemoration of all these men - an expression of our tribute to their devotion to duty, to their courage and patriotism," said Jack Leaming at the VFW 5205 Post of Chestnut Hill's annual ceremony to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on May 27, 2013.

About 50 residents gathered to remember local residents who were killed while defending our country at the Memorial Day Service, which began at Buckley Park (Hartwell Lane and Germantown Ave.), and continued to the World War II memorial at the Water Tower on Ardleigh Street and ended at the World War I Memorial at Germantown Avenue and Mermaid Lane. Veterans placed wreaths at the site and a honor guard team gave a three-volley salute.

Kitty Kelly, a native of Chestnut Hill, said she came to remember the men and women who never came home. She added that she was happy that Chestnut Hill residents continue to honor the neighborhood's fallen heroes.
