Last Tuesday afternoon Mount St. Joseph Academy wrapped up its Catholic Academies dual meet schedule in track and field, hosting the Nazareth Academy team as well as a small group of athletes from Country Day School of the Sacred Heart.

Taking third in the 100-meter dash, Chelsea Slaughter was the only scorer from Sacred Heart, so subtracting that single point and scoring the rest of the affair as a regular dual meet, the Mount Magic prevailed against the Pandas, 83-57. Winning eight races on the track and placing first in three of the field events, Mount St. Joe finished up with a 4-3 record in AACA meets this spring.

Many Mounties have qualified to participate in the Catholic Academies championships, and prior to last Tuesday’s meet several members of the team had achieved the standards for the PIAA District 1 meet. Senior Patricia Hoffman qualified for Districts in the 1600, junior Sarah Lynch made it in both the 400 meters and the 300 hurdles, and sophomore Madeline Reiche met the requirement in the high jump.

In addition, Mount St. Joe qualified its 4 x 800 meter relay team. The MSJ 4 x 8 foursome that ran at the Penn Relays two weekends ago consisted of seniors Meredith Reiche, Patricia Hoffman, and Brittany Robbins, and junior Alyssa Kist.

A different group ran – and won – that race in last week’s dual meet with Nazareth. Hoffman was again included, this time as the anchor, and ahead of her were freshman Jane Prior, senior Lucia Sanchez, and sophomore Tara Gallgher. They finished in nine minutes, 58 seconds to Nazareth’s 10:10, but the Pandas won both of the other relay races, the 4 x 100 (53.4 seconds), and the 4 x 400 (4:19.6).

Lynch won both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles, and freshman sprinter Lauren Ciasullo placed first in the 100 and 200 meter dash. Senior Adrienne Cellucci won the 400, and was the runner-up in the 200. Overall, the Magic was not quite as strong in the field events as Nazareth, but the meet hosts got a very good afternoon’s work from thrower Natalie Hasson. The senior was first in the javelin, and she placed second in both the discus and the shot put.

The other individual winners were sophomore Kate Fitzpatrick in the 1600, senior Katie Gross in the triple jump, Hoffman in the 3200, Madeline Reiche in the high jump, and Meredith Reiche in the 800. Breaking down the two major areas of competition, Mount St. Joe’s 57-29 scoring advantage on the track far outweighed Nazareth’s 28-26 edge in the field events.
