In an Inter-Ac track and field dual meet at Germantown Academy on April 22, visiting Springside Chestnut Hill Academy came out of the five field events with a 23-22 edge in the team scoring, but the host Patriots piled up a 46-31 advantage out on the track to win the affair by a final score of 68-54.

While the SCH Blue Devils slipped to 0-4 in league dual meets, GA leveled off at 2-2, having already defeated Episcopal Academy while suffering setbacks against Haverford School and Malvern Prep. SCH does have a non-league victory over Lower Moreland High School, having beaten the Lions in a three-way meet that included Inter-Ac rival Penn Charter.

In last week’s dual meet, two Germantown Academy families were responsible for most of the Patriots’ first-place finishes in the individual footraces. Senior Earl Edwards won both the 100 and 400 meter events, sophomore Sam Ritz took first place in the 800 and 1600, and Ritz’s older brother Ben, a senior, captured the laurels in the 3200 meter race. Edwards and the elder Ritz are GA’s co-captains this spring.

Sophomore Andrew Simon won the 200 and ran a mere 1/100 of a second behind Edwards to place second in the 400, while also coming in third in the 100 meters. The Patriots also picked up a pair of third-place performances from junior Nelson Floyd in the 200 and 400.

Scoring in four events, freshman Devon Goodman finished second in the 300 intermediate hurdles and third in the 110 high hurdles, and over in the field events he was runner up in the triple jump and landed third in the high jump.

Junior Matt Miller placed third in the 300 hurdles and led a one-two-three sweep for the meet hosts in the pole vault. Springside Chestnut Hill does not yet have a pole vault pit installed at its newly renovated track facility.

What SCH did have was junior Frank Jackson, who emerged as the top individual point scorer of the meet with his victories in the 110 hurdles, the long jump, and the triple jump. Senior Jamil Poole wasn’t far off the pace, winning the 300 hurdles and earning the runner-up spot in both the 110 hurdles and the 100 meters.

In the longer races, junior Graham Allen gave SCH second-place finishes in the 800 and 1600 meters. It was senior Drew Dowds, a Norwood Fontbonne Academy graduate, who produced the Blue Devils’ fifth victory in the individual events, winning the high jump by clearing the bar at 5’8”.

Going into the 4 x 400 meter relay, the last item on the agenda, GA held an insurmountable 68-49 advantage in the team scoring, but at least SCH was able to go home with a win in the final race of the day.

The Blue Devil quartet of (in race order) senior Mac Concannon, sophomore Chris Williams, Allen, and Poole posted a time of 3:38.08 to win comfortably. GA came in second at 3:45.15 with Floyd, Simon, junior Chris Kim and senior Devin Cody.
