Renowned chorus to perform in Mt. Airy

Posted

Northern Harmony, the New England chorus specializing in world music, will return to Philadelphia for a concert as part of its winter tour on Friday, March 1, 7:30 p.m., to be held at the Unitarian church, Lincoln Drive and Wayne Avenue.

The chorus is unusual in its combination of the wild and unrestrained sound of New England singing schools of the 19th century (what is called "shape note" singing), American bluegrass, the hard edged style of Bulgarian folk music, the unusual strains of the music of Caucasian Georgia, the striking melodies of South Africa and songs drawn from the harmony traditions of other European and African countries. Examples of their style can be found here on youtube.com, or search “Northern Harmony chorus.”

The concert is being sponsored by Weavers Way Co-op and is open to the entire community. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for members of Weavers Way, $5 for youths age 12-16 and free for kids under 12. For more information and advance tickets, contact films@weaverway.coop
