The Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Middle School for Girls “Lego Lions” team took First Place in their first visit to a regional robotics championship! The Penn FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Championship Event, held earlier this month, awarded the team first place for its “Innovative Solution.” Enjoying a moment with their trophy are team members (back from left ) Nailah Wheeler, Chloe Rayer, Mei Rose Connor, Sarah Lynch, Sierra Smith, Jaelyn Wingard; (front) Manassah-Grace Brooks, Victoria Cohen, Maddi Ota, Samantha Deutsch, Sadie Duncan, Nahla Turner, Sabrina Wang.[/caption]

Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s Middle School for Girls’ robotics team, the “Lego Lions,” was awarded the First Place: Innovative Solution Award at the Penn FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Championship Event held at the University of Pennsylvania in February.

Each fall, FLL releases The Challenge for the upcoming tournament season – based on a real-world scientific topic – and the teams begin to solve for the two key components: the Robot Game and the Project. The FLL’s “Core Values” including teamwork, sportsmanship, and “gracious professionalism” are the cornerstones of the FLL program, and guide the teams through the experience.

This year’s challenge was to improve the quality of life for senior citizens by helping them continue to be independent, engaged, and connected to their community. The team created “The Read Away,” which is a handheld device that scans written material, remembers it, and reads it back to the senior citizen. Judges awarding the team’s elite honor recognized the girls’ solution as “exceptionally well-considered and creative, with good potential to solve the problem researched.”
