Mary Ann Vigilante Mannino, 69, a poet, author and English professor at Temple University, died Nov. 20 of breast cancer at her home in Chestnut Hill.

Dr. Mannino was an associate professor of English at Temple, where she had taught for more than two decades.

A Germantown native who had lived in Mt. Airy before moving to Chestnut Hill in 1975, she was a graduate of Cecilian Academy. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania and both a master's degree in English and creative writing and a doctorate in literature and writing composition from Temple University.

Dr. Mannino, who took a personal interest in her students, also wrote fiction that was published in the Alabama Review, the Painted Bride Quarterly and other literary journals. She received an Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award in 2001.

After she was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, she filled notebooks with her reflections and poems.

Her marriage to Edward Mannino in 1965 ended in divorce.

She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer O'Donnell; a son, Robert, and a grandson.

Funeral services were held Nov. 27 at Our Mother of Consolation Church in Chestnut Hill, with interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham.

Donations in her name may be made to a memorial scholarship for Dr. Mannino and her late brother. Checks should be written to Temple University, with Joseph L. Vigilante and Mary Ann Mannino Scholarship Fund in the memo section, and sent to Frances Hollingsworth, 1221 Anderson Hall, 1114 W. Berks St., Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122. – WF
