Mrs. Bortnick had been a volunteer at many local organizations, including Meals on Wheels, Friends Psychiatric Hospital and what is now the Chestnut Hill Center for Enrichment, where she led a short story book group with her close friend, the late Rosalind Sperling.
She also had been a reader in elementary schools in Montgomery County and Philadelphia.
Interested in politics, she was a lifelong member of the League of Women Voters.
A native of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Bortnick was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota's Graduate School of Social Work.
She was an avid gardener, bridge player, inventive cook and baker. She and her husband Newman traveled extensively in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Canada and Latin America.
In addition to her husband of 69 years, she is survived by a son, Karl, of Chestnut Hill; daughters Lynn Bergman, of Keene, N.H., and Wendy Lefkowich, of Delmar, N.Y., and six grandchildren. Two sisters, Adeline Green, of Palm Springs, Calif., and June Miller, of St. Louis Park, Minn., preceded her in death. – WF
