Carol Elkman Schwartz, 66, an art dealer and co-owner with her husband, Elliot, of the Carol Schwartz Gallery in Chestnut Hill, died Oct. 1 of thyroid cancer at her home in West Mt. Airy.

Mrs. Schwartz, who represented local, national and international artists, started the business at her former home in Flourtown in 1979 and opened the gallery at 101 Bethlehem Pike in 1990. Her husband joined her in the business in 1995.

Mrs. Schwartz was an art consultant to individuals and corporations, and collaborated with interior designers. In addition to fine art, her gallery also featured vintage posters, jewelry, crafts and Judaica, and offered custom framing.

After visiting Israel in 1979, Mrs. Schwartz organized an exhibit of work by Israeli artist Arona Reiner and donated the gallery proceeds to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.

Originally an antiques dealer, she then began to represent other Jewish artists, and her career in the art world had begun.

Mrs. Schwartz was a graduate of Upper Darby High School and received an associate's degree from Cazenovia College in New York. She taught for a time at a preschool in Center City before opening her own business.

She and her husband lived in a French Normandy-style home in West Mt. Airy that she enjoyed decorating. The couple also owned a home in Ventnor, N.J.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Schwartz is survived by daughters Tammi van Hollander, Wendy Schwartz and Jodi Schwartz-Levy; her parents, Lois and Stanley Elkman; a brother, Stuart Elkman, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 4 at Joseph Levine & Sons in Trevose, with interment at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Trevose.

Memorial donations may be made to the Carol Schwartz Fund for Thyroid Cancer Research, checks payable to the Abramson Cancer Center, 3535 Market St., Philadelphia, PA 19104. – Walter Fox
