Mount golf bursts out of starting gate

With just a week of practice under their belts, Mount St. Joseph Academy’s golfers started in on their league schedule last Tuesday, playing on Gwynedd Mercy Academy’s home course at North Hills Country Club in Glenside.

The visiting Magic were obviously ready for the fray, topping the Monarchs 208-263 as they began the quest for a tenth consecutive championship in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies. The league championship tournament was officially established in 2003, and for a number of years before that the Mount had gone undefeated against AACA opponents.

The Magic graduated four members of last year’s PIAA District 1 runner-up squad, and one current senior switched to another fall sport.

However, the ace player for Mount St. Joe in 2011 was only a freshman, and Isabella DiLisio was back to lead the team to victory in last week’s league debut, firing a 36 on the par-35 front nine at North Hills.

Current junior Alison Snakard was close behind with a 38, and the Magic recorded a pair of 44’s for senior Nicole Mischler and DiLisio’s sophomore classman, Maggie Schoeller.

The top five scores from each team’s eight official participants make up the team score, and the Mount’s total on Tuesday was rounded out by a 46 from freshman Joanie Gannon. The three other designated players were senior Jane Black, with a 49, freshman Megan Bray, with a 51 (a figure which matched the two best rounds for Gwynedd), and junior Julia Shinkle, with a 54.

Black and Mischler are the Mount’s co-captains for 2012, and the third senior on the squad is Margaret Mary Reilly.

The varsity roster also includes junior Emma Feeney and freshmen Mara Boston, Claire Brown, and Laura Park. Michael Dean, a pro at Cedarbrook Country Club in Blue Bell, is back for his second season as MSJ head coach.

A day after their AACA debut against Gwynedd, the Magic travelled out past Valley Forge for a non-league bout against Spring Ford High School.

As part of a 202-255 victory over the host Rams, DiLisio shot a one-under 34 at Linfield National Golf Club, while Snakard crafted a round of 38 and Schoeller carded a 40.
