Several members of Mount St. Joseph Academy’s talented junior class couldn’t attend last Wednesday’s outing in the Lou Cappiella Summer Basketball League, but the Magic still proved thoroughly capable of taking care of business. Topping Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, 46-9 after going up by 20 points before halftime, the Mount completed the regular season schedule in Cappiella competition with an 8-0 record, clinching the top seed for the league playoffs.

Forward Meg Geatens, a rising senior who has been a steady producer on offense all summer, led the winners with a dozen points in the contest, while junior forward Carly Monzo added 10 points to the winning cause, and freshman guard Caitlin Cunningham had nine.

As game time approached, Plymouth Whitemarsh only had four players warming up, but the Colonials ended up with the full complement of five plus a few reserves. The previous game on the evening’s agenda hadn’t been played at all because one of the teams was a no-show. Unfortunately, that’s not an unusual problem at this late stage of the season, as some athletes opt to enjoy some down time during the last few weeks before the start of fall sports practices at their respective schools.

A bucket from the paint by Geatens got the Magic’s side of the scoreboard rolling. The Colonials recouped one point on a free throw, but didn’t score again for more than a dozen minutes. Mount St. Joe had zipped out to a 15-1 lead before Plymouth Whitemarsh converted an offensive rebound for what would be its only field goal of the first half. The Colonials played better than their point total indicated, but they couldn’t seem to figure out the stiff, tricky rims on the Kenrick Rec Center court.

The Magic were up 25-3 at halftime, and they started off the second period with lay-ups by Monzo and junior classmate Gen Hagedorn. PW registered two field goals and a pair of free throws after the intermission, not enough to keep the Mounties from expanding their lead.

Hagedorn wound up with seven points for the winners, who got four apiece from senior Adrienne Cellucci and sophomore Mary Kate Ulasewicz.
