With the July 4 holiday week over, Mount St. Joseph returned to action in the Lou Cappiella Summer Basketball League last week, but not all of the Magic’s players were back on the court. Some of the team’s most experienced athletes had travelled to various AAU tournaments at the start of the month.
It was just as well that the Mount didn’t have a fully staffed squad, since the group on hand worked that much harder to maintain the team’s undefeated record with a 41-19 victory over the Eagles of Norristown High School.
The two veteran players who were on hand, seniors Meg Geatens and Adrienne Cellucci, registered 11 and nine points, respectively, with Cellucci hitting all of her points in the first half to help give the Magic the upper hand early in the contest.
After Geatens struck from just inside the foul line to open the scoring in the game, the Eagles countered with a three-point field goal to acquire their only lead of the evening. A free throw by Cellucci tied it up at 3-3, then Geatens bagged a three-pointer and freshman Caitlin Cunningham converted off an offensive rebound to thrust the Magic ahead for good.
Cellucci hit two jumpers, deposited a free throw, and scored on a fast break off of a steal, leading Mount St. Joe to a 22-11 halftime advantage. Sophomore Mary Kate Ulasewicz and freshman Sarah Wills added lay-ups for the leaders.
Junior Gen Hagedorn got the MSJ offense moving again after the intermission, and over the first 15 minutes the Magic outscored the Eagles, 17-2. Although Norristown has graduated 6’3” Tyshay Britten, the Eagles still had a height advantage over the Mount last Tuesday, but the Magic held their own on the boards. Even when solid rebounding allowed the Eagles multiple shooting opportunities on a number of different possessions, they had trouble putting the ball in the hoop.
Ulasewicz finished with six points for the Mount and Cunningham had five, while Hagedorn and Wills recorded four points apiece and Katie Maransky found the net on a baseline jumper to round out the scoring.
