Presentation to highlight ‘transformation’ of Lovett Park

Mt. Airy, USA and the Community Design Collaborative will present conceptual design plans for the new proposed Lovett Park. The presentation will be followed by Dining under the Stars and Moonlight Movies in Mt. Airy screening of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

On Friday, July 13th at 6:30 p.m., the Mt. Airy community is invited to see what’s in store for Lovett Park at the Lovett Park Design Presentation. Lovett Park is an open green space adjacent to Lovett Memorial Library, 6945 Germantown Ave.

Volunteers from the Community Design Collaborative will present conceptual designs for the park that illustrate the vision that emerged from an extensive community engagement process. The presentation will be held in the park. Images from the design plan will be displayed on boards throughout the space so that visitors can see first-hand how the plan transforms the site while building upon existing assets of open space, trees, and gardens.

The goal for Lovett Park is to transform the open space beside Lovett Memorial Library into a vibrant community asset that will enhance Germantown Avenue in Mt. Airy by connecting two nodes of the commercial corridor with a beautiful, pedestrian-friendly park.

In 2011, Mt. Airy USA began working with the Community Design Collaborative to help develop a vision for what this site could become. After a series of community meetings that included members of the East and West Mt. Airy Neighbors civic groups, business owners, and area residents, the design team generated a conceptual design plan for the site, which will be presented Friday evening.

The plan reflects the variety of park uses suggested by community members and includes a number of new elements that will help attract visitors and energy to Germantown Avenue, including: an amphitheater for outdoor performances, a plaza with café tables and chairs, a nature play area for children, and a re-designed and welcoming entrance to the library that features outdoor chess tables. These features will also open up new programming opportunities for the Lovett Memorial Library.

Following the presentation, attendees are encouraged to spend the evening in Lovett Park to enjoy dinner and a movie. Starting at 6:30 p.m. , popular local gourmet food trucks Pitruco Pizza and Sweetbox Cupcakes will be at the park for Dining under the Stars. At 8:30 p.m., there will be a free screening of “To Kill a Mockingbird” as part of the weekly Moonlight Movies in Mt. Airy series, presented by Mt. Airy, USA in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Trolley Car Diner.

These events occur weekly through Friday, August 17th and allow visitors to get a taste of what’s to come in Lovett Park. During Dining under the Stars, temporary café tables and chairs will be set up roughly where the future plaza will be located, while the outdoor movie screening hints at the cultural entertainment events that will be possible once the amphitheater is in place.
