Mount St. Joseph Academy was missing many of its varsity regulars last Tuesday, but that actually made for a more interesting basketball game as the Magic topped St. Hubert’s, 34-26, in their last summer league outing before the July 4 holiday hiatus. Leading by just three points at halftime, the Mounties asserted themselves at the start of the second period to stretch the margin to 10 points, then they held on to achieve a 4-0 record.

Forwards Meg Geatens and Emily Carpenter led the Magic out to a 7-0 lead and it looked like another runaway victory could be in the offing. However, the next five points belonged to the Bambies, so St. Hubert’s was right back in it.

Powered by penetrating drives by guard Biff Jones, the Bambies pretty much matched the Magic for the rest of the half. Mount St. Joe was up 15-12 at the interval, when Geatens had eight points in the books.

Back-to-back baskets by Carpenter started the Magic off in the second half. Geatens hit a free throw and then both she and incoming freshman Sarah Wills drove for lay-ups. A baseline jumper by sophomore Katie Maransky completed an 11-4 run for Mount St. Joe, who now had a double- digit advantage at 26-16. Here, with 10:02 left to play, St. Hubert’s called a time-out.

The Mounties didn’t score a field goal the rest of the way, but they did get to the free throw line often as St. Hubert’s had to start fouling for ball possession. First, through, the Bambies staged a little 6-1 rally, cutting their deficit in half for a 27-22 tally.

Mount St. Joe began to methodically take time off the clock, and St. Hubert’s had to commit three quick fouls in a row to put the Magic into the one-and-one bonus with 1:24 remaining in the game. Geatens got the lead back up to 10 points by hitting five of six foul shots.

The score closed up to 32-26 as the Bambies bagged two free throws of their own and hit a lay-up, but the Mount had the final word as Cunningham hooped two shots from the foul line.

Of Geatens’ 17 total points, 11 came on free throws, while Carpenter finished with six points and Cunningham with four. The winners also received two points apiece from Maransky, Wills, and Jenny Geatens, and one from Mary Kate Ulasewicz.
