Rev. Jean Mather, Episcopal rector

The Rev. Jean Mather, 65, rector of Christ Church and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Germantown for the past 13 years, died June 13 of heart failure while attending a vestry meeting in the parish house.

A former college professor, Dr. Mather was ordained in the Episcopal Diocese of Illinois in 1995 and assisted at a church in the Hyde Park section of Chicago and at St. James Cathedral in Chicago before coming to Philadelphia.

She also served on the board of Episcopal Community Services in Philadelphia.

She was raised in Utah as a Methodist and became an Episcopalian while attending the University of Chicago, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1968. After earning a doctorate in English history from Yale University 1n 1975, she taught at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia and at the New College of Florida in Sarasota, where she also was assistant provost.

She received a master of divinity degree from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., prior to her ordination.

Dr. Mather is survived by a sister, Janet.

Funeral services were held June 19 at Christ Church and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the family plot in Sandy City, Utah. – WF
