Volunteers needed for annual Wissahickon Creek Clean Up on April 28

An army of volunteers armed with trash bags will descend upon the Wissahickon Creek and its surrounding trails collecting anything from plastic bags and recyclables to mattresses and tires. This Saturday marks the 42nd anniversary of Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association's (WVWA) annual Wissahickon Creek Clean Up, and the third year that Friends of Wissahickon has combined forces with WVWA volunteers to clean up the creek from top to bottom-all 21 miles of it. “It's a great project because anyone can do it,” said Anne Standish, director of development for the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association. “It's a great community event that teaches the value of good stewardship. It's a very inclusive event. The challenge this year will be to clean up all the debris from the flooding caused by Hurricane Irene and severe thunderstorms last year.” Standish estimated that over 250 volunteers will participate in this year's clean up on Saturday, April 28. After the clean up, all volunteers are invited to attend the annual WVWA's Talkin' Trash picnic which will be held at the Militia Hill Pavilion in Fort Washington State Park. Come volunteer and work with the Friends of the Wissahickon in Philadelphia, meet at the pavilion along Forbidden Drive, a short distance south of the intersection of Forbidden Drive and Northwestern Avenue. Parking is available along Northwestern Avenue. To register go to www.fow.org or call Dan Mercer at 215-247-0417 ex. 107. To help out in Montgomery County, all volunteers must be pre-assigned a section of the Wissahickon Creek or a tributary to clean; sites range from Lansdale to Flourtown. Contact Bob Adams at 215-646-8866 ex. 14.
