Seniors sick, Lions picked off in golf

With seniors Sam Blake and Kelly Brady home sick last Wednesday, the line-up on the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy golf team got very young in a hurry.

In a match on the Lions’ home course at Sunnybrook Golf Club, visiting Academy of Notre Dame received its top three scores from 12th-graders in a 248-321 victory. Dena O’Larnic was the only senior in the match for SCH, which slipped to 1-3 on the season.

Notre Dame, the three-time defending champions in the Girls Inter-Ac League, had also beaten the Lions earlier in the season, and each team owned a victory over Baldwin School. Springside Chestnut Hill’s record also includes a close (nine stroke) loss to Episcopal Academy.

SCH seniors Blake and Brady, also starters on the school’s squash team, will attend Sewanee (University of the South) and Trinity College, respectively. O’Larnic, a swimming standout during the winter season, will make a shorter trip to Ursinus College.

At Sunnybrook back on April 10, the Lions knocked off Baldwin, 284-295. Brady led the way with a round of 48, while Katie Shields came in with a 58 and fellow sophomores Serena McNiff and Morgan Schneer each carded a 59.

Two days later at White Manor Country Club, SCH was nipped by Episcopal, 262-271. In that outing the Lions received a score of 47 from Brady, a 49 from O’Larnic, and a 54 from Blake.

Most of last Wednesday’s Notre Dame rematch was played in a light rain, and this obviously bothered SCH more than the Irish. With the Lions short-staffed, there were two regular foursomes, and two other groups with two Notre Dame players and one from the home team. Out of the eight official entrants for each side, the top five scores are counted towards the team total.

In the first group, McNiff shot a 59 for SCH, while Notre Dame collected the match low of 44 from Brigh Desjardins and a 47 from her senior classmate, Alex Stensland. Another threesome followed, netting the Lions a 58 from Schneer, and the Irish a 51 from upperclassman Courtney Mangano. The other Notre Dame score from this group, produced by Stephanie Bellisario, was later discarded in the team scoring.

When the first of the foursomes finished up, O’Larnic arrived with a 63 for the host school, and Shields scored a 67. The visitors scratched a round by Grace Desjardins, while counting a 53 fired by another sophomore, Coryn Mullen.

Representing SCH in the last group were freshman Maddie Nicol and sophomore Sarah Schacht, and Nicol’s 74 rounded out the team score for the Lions. Completing the tally for the victorious Irish was a 53 by sophomore Erica Westlake, and the figure fashioned by junior Kelliann McGlynn went by the boards.
