Jane Meigs Barton died at dawn on December 25, 2011, at her home in Waxhaw, N.C.  She was born as Jane Perry Rodgers Meigs on June 4, 1920, to beloved parents Robert Rodgers and Margaret Houston Meigs, at Mt. Felix Farm in Havre de Grace, Md. She spent her childhood in Maryland and then in Pennsylvania, where she attended The Agnes Irwin School and the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women (now part of Temple University). In 1942, Jane married her late husband, Henry Hudson Barton IV, at The Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in Philadelphia. They lived in North Creek, N.Y., where Hudson served as president of The Barton Group. From 1965 to 2005, they resided in Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood.  Together they enjoyed skiing, canoeing, and pursuing other interests. Many will remember Jane's uncanny ability to recite poetry, Scripture, and songs she had learned as a child or memorized in preparation for special events. Jane was an enthusiastic supporter of various organizations that reflected her Christian faith and her dedication to nature conservation. She taught children’s classes at Morris Arboretum and Schuylkill Valley Nature Center, she was a strong supporter of the Natural Lands Trust, and she was closely involved with FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians in Universities and Schools) and Friends of the Wissahickon.  In later years, she studied through the Hadley School for the Blind and learned Braille. Upon the death of her husband, Jane moved to Heron Point, in Chestertown, Md., and then to North Carolina to be close to her son.  She is survived by her son, H. Hudson Barton V, daughter, Sallie B. Kashiwa, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and her sister Mary Meigs Brock of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Hadley School for the Blind. A memorial service will be held on the 5th of May at 11:30 AM at The Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
