Out of the nine seniors who made commitments in writing, all but one were members of the Magic’s varsity eight, which could be one of the best crews in the distinguished history of the program. The lone exception was Flourtown’s Burke Brabson, one of the chief offensive threats on the Mount St. Joe lacrosse team. The niece of MSJ president S. Kathleen Brabson, the MSJ attacker decided before the start of the school year to continue her career at La Salle University. The only member of the Mount’s V-8 who hasn’t picked her college is three-seat Lauren Matchett, who, as a sophomore, has another two years to ponder her pick. Some of the Magic boatmates won’t be seeing the last of each other after they graduate. Boston’s Northeastern University has successfully recruited both coxswain Erin McElroy and six-seat Katie O’Connell, who was a member of the 2011 U.S. Junior Developmental Team over the summer. Two-seat Rose Ehrlich and seven seat Julie McGlynn will both be making the short trip downtown to Drexel University. Five-seat Darian DiCianno, a varsity eight rower since her sophomore year, is travelling farther afield, having signed on with the University of Southern California. The other three are heading south; bow rower Emily Carbone to Georgetown, stroke Dana Lerro to Duke, and four-seat Dana Zielinski to Clemson. While Brabson verballed to La Salle back in July, other seniors needed a little more time to make up their minds, such as McElroy. Just before the start of the signing period, the coxswain was on her way home from an official recruiting visit in Florida, and called the Northeastern coach from an airport concourse to say she’d be joining the Huskies. In the end, all nine athletes got the important but tedious process of college selection out of the way, and may now focus on their final months of Mount St. Joe sports.
