John D. Moran Jr., cameraman

John D. Moran Jr., 49, formerly of Chestnut Hill, a freelance cameraman, died of pancreatic cancer Oct. 29 at his home in Norristown.

Until his illness prevented him from working, Mr. Moran had been a freelance cameraman and grip for weddings, commercial productions, special events and sporting events at Veterans Stadium and The Spectrum.

Raised in Chestnut Hill, the son of John D. Moran and Ann Biddle Moran Hepburn, he graduated from Chestnut Hill Academy and spent a postgraduate year at the Lawrenceville School before moving to New York City to study acting at the HP Studio.

Returning to Chestnut Hill, he worked for a time at Kilian’s hardware store and Future Video. He pursued acting with The Stagecrafters and performed with a band he started called Dougie and the Dogs.

In his 30s, Mr. Moran attended Temple University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in radio, television and film. At Temple he won a prize for a short film he had made about his struggle with bipolar disorder.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Kowalski, and a brother, James Biddle Moran.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in the Blue Room of St. Martin’s Clubhouse, 415 W. Willow Grove Ave., in Chestnut Hill.

Memorial donations may be made to the Morris Animal Refuge, 1242 Lombard St., Philadelphia, PA 19147, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.  – WF
