Lewis S. Somers III, 85, and his wife, Elizabeth, 84, of Lafayette Hill, died Aug. 30 of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator at their summer home in Raymond, Maine.

The couple were using the generator after Hurricane Irene had cut off electric power to their home on Sebago Lake. Investigators, who said the generator had a permanent connection to an exterior exhaust system, were unable to determine the cause of the accident.

Mr. Somers was chairman of Harmac Medical Products Inc., a medical supply company that he owned in Buffalo, N.Y. He was a graduate of the William Penn Charter School and Williams College, receiving his bachelor’s degree after interrupting his studies to serve in the Army during World War II.

Mrs. Somers was a graduate of Norristown High School and Mary Washington College.

The Somers were active participants and supporters of many Philadelphia institutions, including the William Penn Charter School, the Morris Arboretum, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill, the Franklin Institute, the University of Pennsylvania Craft Show, the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania Antique Show, and the International House.

The Somers, who would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this month, are survived by sons Lewis IV and John; a daughter, Beth, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., in Chestnut Hill.

Memorial donations may be made to the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation, P.O. Box 322, Buffalo, NY 14205. – WF
