Bragging rights in a Villanova University student housing apartment were on the line in one of the late games in the NCAA summer league last Thursday. Jesse “Pinkfoot” Carey, a Germantown Academy alumna and member of the White team, squared off against her teammate and roommate Devin Kane, a Notre Dame Academy grad who plays summer ball for Kelly Green. The Green outfit, which also includes Mount St. Joseph Academy alums Sarah McGorry (Lafayette) and Elle Hagedorn (Harvard), earned a convincing 87-60 victory.

In the early round of games last Thursday, Chestnut Hill College junior Lindsay Alexander and sophomore Victoria Mazzeo were on hand to play for the Gold team. Gold’s opponent was the West Chester University squad performing under the Columbia Blue moniker, but Blue was unable to assemble five players until after it was forced to officially forfeit the game. The ensuing exhibition bout was won on the court by Gold, barely.

Trailing in the final minute, Columbia Blue bagged a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to forge ahead, 40-38. Gold pulled out the win thanks to a Princeton University teammate of Mount St. Joseph alumna Laura Johnson. Addie Micir (Council Rock North) showed why she was the unanimous choice as the 2011 Ivy League Player of the Year by hitting a three-point shot at the buzzer.

A few minutes into the White - Kelly Green clash, the latter team held a 7-6 edge, and then the Green group zipped away on a 19-2 romp. Notre Dame Academy product Katie Kuester (St. Joseph’s U.) banged in nine points during the surge and Lehigh University’s Kelly Peterson plunked down a pair of three-pointers.

White wouldn’t go quietly, though, climbing back in contention with 11 unanswered points. Late in the opening period Kelly clung to a 35-31 advantage, but led 39-31 at the intermission thanks to another trey from Peterson and a free throw by Kane.

Kane’s roomie, Carey, scored one point for White in the first half, but added a lay-up, a short jumper, and a three-point bucket in the second round to finish with eight points. Still, her team never again got as close to the leaders as it did late in the first period. Five minutes in, the spread was still in single figures at 49-40, then a trey and a lay-up off a steal by Kane (11 points total) helped power an 11-1 spree for Kelly Green, which then cruised to victory.

Peterson pounded in 28 points, Kuester collected 23, and MSJ grad McGorry divided her 16 points evenly between the halves. Carey and Kane’s Villanova teammate Laura Sweeney was the only double-digit scorer for the White team, winding up with 15 points.
