Philadelphia native and soulful jazz artist Joanna Pascale will take the stage for the Pastorius Park concert series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 20.
Pascale grew up listening to classic songs by Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole. They inspired her to study jazz and its beginnings.
“I memorized these songs as if they were a part of my generation's popular music,” Pascale writes on her website.
Called a “rising star” by fans and critics, Pascale, 24, has amassed a repertoire of more than 500 songs. She also performs three nights a week with her quintet at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia.
Pascale attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts and then went on to study music at Temple University. Despite all of her success, Pascale hasn’t strayed too far from the Temple campus, where today she teaches private voice lessons, coaches ensembles and conducts master classes.
Because of her strong foundation in the classics, Pascale was able to resurrect certain songs that she said “would fall through the cracks.”
Her musical education influenced both her 2004 album “When Lights are Low” and 2008’s “Through My Eyes.” Both albums cover a wide range of classics that she enhances with her smooth sound. Both have been met with critical and fan acclaim from all parts of the United States.
The Pastorius Park Concert Series is sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association, the Chestnut Hill Community Fund and Chestnut Hill Hospital.
