Attendance was down a bit across the board at the Philly NCAA summer basketball league last Thursday, as some team members joined many of their fellow citizens in celebrating the Fourth of July with a five-day weekend. The usual round of Tuesday games were called off for July 5, with action slated to resume two nights later.

They always say if you want something done, ask a truly busy person, and one of the players who turned out for the Purple team’s game last Thursday was Cathy Peduzzi, a Germantown Academy graduate who has a family of her own nowadays. Known as Cathy Hebling when she was a forward for the Patriots, she was the first girls basketball player at the school to score 1000 career points. She went on to play at American University, where she graduated in 1998.

Peduzzi was an assistant coach back at GA last winter. In summer league action on Thursday she scored six points for the Purple, which held only a one point edge over Lime Green (the Philadelphia U. franchise) at halftime, but went on to win 65-44.

On a different court, the Cardinal Red team nailed down its first victory of the summer season, receiving six points from 2011 Mount St. Joseph Academy graduate Mary Jo Horgan in a 74-49 decision over the Gold team. Making her initial appearance of the summer for the Gold was Chestnut Hill College’s Lindsay Alexander. The rising junior forward scored five points but saw her squad stumble in the second half after only trailing 31-26 at the interlude.

Alexander was squaring off against onetime Griffins teammate Chant’al Hardy, who graduated from CHC in 2010 and is now playing for Cardinal Red during the summer.

Former Germantown Academy guard Jesse Carey (now midway through her college career at Villanova) didn’t have one of her more productive nights, netting a lone free throw as her White squad was shaded by the Black team, 57-45.

Defending league champion Kelly Green was missing both the Mount players on its roster, but was able to ride a 30-19 halftime lead to a 59-49 win over Columbia Blue, an outfit made up entirely of West Chester University women.
