Upper Dublin High School’s Lady Cardinals stayed right with Mount St. Joseph Academy through much of the first half of last Wednesday’s summer league basketball contest, but late in the period the Magic gained some separation and were ahead 25-18 at the break.
The teams traded points early in the second round, then the Mounties pulled away smartly as sophomore guard Alex Louin posted 11 of her game-high 17 points after the intermission. The 48-31 victory, which included 11-point performances from seniors Bridget Higgins and Cailin Schmeer, lifted the Mount to a 3-0 record. The league is based at Hatboro Horsham High School, although Mount St. Joe actually played its first two games at another location.
Last Wednesday’s game commenced with a three-point field goal by Magic senior Maddie Kohler, but Upper Dublin quickly answered in kind, and then went on to lead 9-5. After an MSJ jumper by Schmeer tied it up at 9-9 a few minutes later, the Cardinals forged ahead again, 15-11.
The Mount moved ahead for good with a 10-1 assault, as Louin, Geatens, Monzo and Higgins all found the basket during the spree. A final exchange of field goals set the tally at 25-18 for the interlude. The score seesawed up to 28-21 as the second half got underway, then the Mount ramped up its transition offense and put the Cardinals away with a 13-1 charge that incorporated four field goals by Louin.
The Magic had enjoyed similar opportunities during the first half, but failed to finish on a number of shots. Once things started to click for the Mounties in the second round, they pushed their lead into double figures and kept it there.
With around eight minutes to go the Cardinals canned back-to-back three pointers, but their offense sputtered after that and they never put together a serious comeback. Mount St. Joe led 48-27 before Upper Dublin scored the last two field goals of the night.
In addition to the output of the three double-digit scorers, the Magic received four points from Monzo, three from Kohler, and two from Geatens.
