Handicapped girl takes flight

Eight-year-old Fiona Dow of Plymouth Meeting doesn’t let cerebral palsy stop her from doing anything. On May 21 she’ll prove that when her wish to take flight comes true at Doylestown Airport.

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age two, Dow requires a walker to get around. Her wish to fly has been granted by the Sunshine Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Feasterville that answers the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children ages three to 18.

For the second year, the Bucks County Airport Authority (BCAA) and the Doylestown Pilots Association (DPA) are partnering with the Sunshine Foundation to make the “gift of flight” possible for children like Dow. Fiona and her family will take flight at approximately 11:45 a.m. on May 21.

Jennifer Dow, Fiona’s mother, says everyone in the family is looking forward to the plane ride.  “The kids are so excited,” she says.  “Fiona loves the limelight so she is the perfect representative to have this chance. I think we are all a little bit nervous, but not enough to stop us. Fiona doesn’t let anything stop her; she’ll try anything.”

The BCAA and DPA are hosting their eighth annual “Celebration of Flight” Open House at Doylestown Airport on Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event features a range of family-friendly activities, including radio-controlled airplane demonstrations, airplane rides, food and refreshments, music and a display of aircraft and historical memorabilia.
