Strolling over from their own track just a block away, the girls of Germantown Friends opened their dual meet season with a non-league contest against the Quakers of Penn Charter. Garnering most of its points from first-place finishes in a dozen events, PC outpointed the visiting Tigers, 76-49.

It was the second head-to-head engagement for Charter, which won a very early Girls Inter-Ac League opener against Springside back on St. Patrick’s Day. GFS was making its dual meet debut but was focused on other things, such as a large invitational meet at Neshaminy High School on Saturday and its Friends Schools League opener a few days after that.

“This was an opportunity to try some things out,” said Tigers coach Rob Hewitt. “We wanted to have our relays ready for the Lady Skins (the Neshaminy event) and for our meet on Tuesday with George School. They’re the defending champions in our league, and I think we’ll also have to watch out for Friends Central and Westtown.”

Back at the meet against Springside, Penn Charter mentor Liz Fleming made note of the multi-event scoring capabilities of two seniors bound for the University of Pennsylvania, Amma Ntoso and Colleen Fehm. Last Thursday Ntoso won all four of the events she entered, the long jump, the triple jump, and the 100 and 300 hurdles. Fehm focused on vertical distance as she captured first place in the high jump and the pole vault.

Sophomore Catie Skinner, the 2010 Pa. Independent Schools cross country champion, won the 1600 meters for the Quakers and came in second behind her senior teammate, Elyse Wilkinson.

GFS received a strong showing in the sprints from junior Morgan Ramsey, who won the 100 meter dash and was runner-up in the 200. In the longer footraces, sophomore Eliza Lukens-Day delivered second-place points for the visitors in the 1600, and placed third in the 800.

Other than that, the Tigers’ points came from a wide variety of performers. PC swept the shot put thanks to junior Saagarika Thanvi, sophomore Ashley Brown, and senior Heather Jones, but Germantown scored in every other event.

In the mile relay at the end of the afternoon, GFS cruised after Tess junior Doggett opened up an imposing lead on the opening leg. Fellow 11th grader Carey Celata and seniors Sarah Bergman and Brooke Palus brought it home for the Tigers.
