Water Tower will be target for Philly Spring Cleanup this Saturday

The Water Tower Recreation Center in Chestnut Hill is home to a pre-school, and a playground frequented by the children. That’s why it’s important for the grounds to be kept clean, said Barbara Diaz, a volunteer with the center.

“This is home for us,” said Diaz, who lives two blocks from the center.

The center, on East Hartwell Avenue in Chestnut Hill, is one of many locations that will benefit from the fourth annual Philly Spring Cleanup on Saturday, hosted by the city’s Streets Department.

The water tower and playground are currently surrounded by debris that has fallen from trees and other garbage that has accumulated from kids playing.

The Cleanup, which will be held from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, began in 2008. It’s first year resulted in the largest one-day cleanup in American history, according to the Streets Department. Last year, more than 11,000 volunteers worked at 231 sites throughout the city.

This year, Diaz has been promoting the event around the community to encourage a large turnout at the water tower. The Chestnut Hill Youth Sport Club and a local Boy Scout Troop—of which Diaz’s son is a member—will be there.

“It’s like a family event,” Diaz said. “While the kids play on the playground, the parents can get some exercise and clean up. It’s a perfect opportunity for families to be outside and clean the water tower.”
