Huddled infront of Jenks Elementary School on a cold Thursday morning, Verna Tyner kicked off her campaign for 8th District Council with broad remarks touching on education, abandoned property and crime.

She appeared with 9th Ward Democratic Leader John O'Connell, who said he was lending his support to Tyner because he believes she'd bring the kind of leadership change the 8th District needs. O'Connell stressed that the 9th Ward Democratic Committee has not endorsed a candidate yet.

Tyner will vie for the seat of current councilwoman Donna Reed Miller, who announced she would retire this year after holding the office for 15 years.

Tyner, a former staffer of city councilmen Bill Greenlee and the late David Cohen, is a lifelong Tioga resident. Her campaign's website is here.
