Wyndmoor, PA (January 31, 2011) – Peter C. Amuso, a Wyndmoor attorney and former Democratic candidate for Montgomery County District Attorney, has announced his candidacy for Magisterial District Judge for Springfield Township, Montgomery County District Court 38-1-08.

The former Springfield Township School Board member and U.S. Army prosecutor maintains a busy law practice from his Erdenheim office. He said he plans to build on the tradition of excellence in the local court by establishing a community service program for young offenders and using technology to ease communication between the court and police investigators.

“With the widespread availability of court records on the Internet, summary convictions for retail theft, disorderly conduct, and other offenses can have a devastating effect on the future of our young people,” Amuso said. “With my expertise in our criminal justice system, and building on programs in our area, I will increase community service options for young offenders that will teach them a lesson while avoiding the stigma of a criminal conviction.”

Amuso said he believes young offenders have the greatest potential to learn from their mistakes. By ordering them to perform meaningful community service and closely monitoring their school performance, Amuso will give these young people the opportunity to make a positive impact on the Township and grow to become responsible citizens.

As an experienced attorney who understands the nuances of the judicial process, Amuso said he recognized that today’s technology offered simple solutions to ensure that police investigations and arrests can be conducted swiftly and fairly.

“Among the many critical legal decisions made by the Magisterial District Judge every day is whether or not to approve police search warrants of our homes and automobiles,” he continued. “I will take advantage of improvements in communication to increase the speed of the review process, so that our police can execute good search warrants quickly.”

Amuso attended Georgetown University on an Army ROTC scholarship. After graduating with honors from Harvard Law School, he gained valuable prosecutorial and criminal defense attorney experience as an active duty member of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps while he was stationed in Albania and Germany. He served in the Army for four years, attaining the rank of captain.

He and his wife Colleen have lived in Wyndmoor since 2004, where they are raising their four children.

Besides his busy law practice, Amuso is active with the Township VFW Post 7919, the Sons of Italy, and serves as a CYO basketball and soccer coach. From 2005 to 2009, he served on the School Board of the School District of Springfield Township, where he chaired the Property Committee and championed the construction of the new Erdenheim Elementary School and the renovated Springfield Township Middle School as LEED-certified environmentally friendly buildings. He also sits on the board of Keystone Hospice in Wyndmoor, where he serves as secretary.
