Cathy McGuckin of The Candle Shop at 8432 Germantown Ave., a Chestnut Hill business for 50 years, announced this week that she will be closing her doors on March 4.
For McGuckin, who has owned the shop for 22 of those 50 years, closing the shop is difficult.
She said she “agonized over the decision” around Christmas before making up her mind.
“I think it’s time for me to move on,” McGuckin said. “Twenty-two years is a long time. It’s time for me to do something different.”
She isn’t sure what exactly her future holds just yet.
“I’ve been a teacher, a mother, a wife, a manager at Estee Lauder," she said. " I bought the shop in ’89 and never looked back."
Right now she just wants to “take time to enjoy my grandchildren and relax.”
She said she will miss her customers the most.
“Some of my customers have become my friends after 22 years.”
McGuckin hasn’t ruled out someday selling candles again though.
“I’m thinking about maybe doing something seasonal,” she said, possibly during Halloween and Christmas.
“Maybe,” she emphasized.
Starting this week, McGuckin has trimmed up to 50 percent off of her entire inventory in an effort to move everything before she closes.
The shop's hours are Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5:30pm; Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store's phone number is 215-248-1459.
