Thomas J. Timoney, lawyer

Thomas J. Timoney, 83, formerly of Wyndmoor, a lawyer who had long been active in land preservation, died of a cerebral hemorrhage Dec. 30 at Foulkeways at Gwynedd.

Mr. Timoney was a partner in the firm of Timoney Knox, where he started as a clerk in 1950, and had been for many years a solicitor for the Springfield Township School District.

He had served for 52 years as a director of the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association, which recently established the 100-acre Timoney Preserve in honor of his decades of work in land preservation.

In 2005 Mr. Timoney was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the Montgomery County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and its Judicial Selection Committee, the Orphans’ Court Rules Committee, and was past president of the Montgomery County Estate Planning Council, which presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

He also had received service awards from Lower Gwynedd Township and the Flourtown Fire Company.

He was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, which named him a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his long service to the club.

He was a past president of both the Artman Home in Ambler and the Timber Trails Community Association in Pocono Pines.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War as a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Office at the Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan.

He was a graduate of Springfield High School, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Mr. Timoney is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Miriam Jacquette; daughters Joan, Ellen Melle, Judith, Susan and Leslie; sons Thomas Jr., Col. Paul Timoney, USMC, Patrick and Brian; sisters Dolores Shields and Sister Eunice Marie, IHM, and 16 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 5 at Seven Dolors Church in Wyndmoor. Memorial donations may be made to Aid for Friends, 12271 Townsend Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154, or at www.aidforfriends.org. – WF

Richard T. Welsh, securities broker

Richard T. Welsh, 69, of Chestnut Hill, a securities broker and advisor for more than four decades, died from complications of colon cancer Dec. 27, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

At the time of his death, Mr. Welsh was a senior vice president in investments at Wells Fargo Advisors.

He served as an infantry platoon commander and adjutant with the Third Marine Division during the Vietnam War and was promoted to captain. For his service, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V” and several other medals and ribbons, including a Presidential Unit Citation.

He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory High School and St. Joseph’s University.

A lifelong sailor, he kept a sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay for 30 years.

Mr. Welsh is survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Mary Sue Haydon; sons Brian and Richard T. Jr.; a brother, Henry; a sister, Celia Creskoff, and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 4 at Our Mother of Consolation Church in Chestnut Hill with interment in Cavalry Cemetery.
