The Perfect Stitch If you have a piece of furniture that you just love but is showing signs of wear, don't toss it; upholster it! Owner and designer Bruce Levin has plenty of experience and an extensive selection of fabrics. He is an expert sewer and makes awesome pillows, custom draperies and padded headboards for all size beds, in any shape you want. Bruce gives free quotes and estimates, and he will pick up your piece and deliver when done. Estimated time to complete a piece is two to three weeks. The Perfect Stitch also sells some true antique furniture pieces which Bruce finds at estate sales. They are unusual, beautiful and reasonably priced. Give your favorite old chair a makeover, and fall in love all over again. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9 to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 to noon; however, Bruce suggests that you call first. His cell phone number is 215-280-7747. 8012 Germantown Ave.

Roots Just on the Avenue one year, this cool and contemporary shop is definitely an asset to our neighborhood. Heather Doran Stauffer is the owner and buyer, and she has good taste, filling her space with items to compliment any home, including vases, candles and diffusers, soaps, pillows, wall stickers, furniture, lighting and more. This is also a place for buying a wedding or engagement gift. Heather has knife sets made in France by Claude Dozorme. The mounted animal heads made from papier mache are eye-catching conversation pieces. Roots is located on the corner of Willow Grove and Germantown Avenues. The website for Roots is interesting and informative; check it out at www.shop-rootsinc.com. 7946 Germantown Ave., 267-385-5753. The hours are Tuesday to Friday, 11 to 5; Saturday, 10 to 5, and Sunday, 10 to 5.

J.L. Murray & Co.

Joe and Lori Cooney run this charming eyeglass shop. Joe is an optician who has been working here since 1976. Glasses are an important accessory, and it's good to know that you can get quality eye wear and professional care right here on the Hill. An excellent selection of prescription and non-prescription sunglasses is sold here, too. Also available are accessories for your glasses, like pretty chains, cords and cases. If your looking for reading glasses, Murray has a good variety of these also, including a cute set for $42; it comes with a chain and case (gift idea). Joe & Lori give a 10% discount to senior citizens, local business owners and employee and CHCA members. Hard to fill and strong prescriptions are no problem for Joe; he's old school. Average wait time for glasses is one week. You can bring your old frames here; they donate them to the poor. Hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 to 5; Wednesday, 9 to 6, and Saturday, 9 to 1. 8632 Germantown!
